Award in Principles of Financial Accounting

The Award in Principles of Financial Accounting equips students with the core principles and practices of financial accounting. It delves into fundamental accounting techniques, focusing on how business transactions and events are meticulously recorded, processed, and ultimately reported. Students will gain hands-on experience by preparing financial statements and conducting high-level analyses to glean valuable insights. Additionally, this award explores the consolidation process, guiding students in creating simple consolidated financial statements from the individual statements of group-affiliated entities.

Learners will learn how to:

  • Apply double-entry accounting and the accounting equation to record transactions
  • Prepare and correct trial balances, including the use of a suspense account
  • Draw conclusions using qualitative characteristics of financial information
  • Create consolidated financial statements for subsidiaries and associated entities
  • Analyse inter-linkages between financial statements and understand profitability, liquidity, resource efficiency, and financial position concepts

 

Awarding Body

This qualification is awarded by Central Mediterranean Business School (CMBS).

Accrediting Body

This qualification is accredited by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority. MFHEA deems the Award in Principles of Financial Accounting to be at Level 5 in the Malta Qualifications Framework and the European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the programme, candidates must hold any one of the following requirements:

  • MQF Level 4 qualification in accountancy, finance or a relevant field
  • Matriculation certificate with passes in at least 2 A-levels and 3 Intermediates
  • Matsec certificate with 4 passes at Grade 5 or better in accounts, english, mathematics and any other subject
  • Relevant work experience in a relevant field

Non-native English speakers must also have an English qualification such as CEFR or IELTS 5.5.

Mode of Assessment

The Award in Principles of Financial Accounting will be assessed through the use of an exam, an individual project and a reflective journal.
